When clicking the "Webmail" link from Inside Augsburg opens a personal Gmail account instead of your Augsburg email, try one of the following options. If using Augsburg computers, it is best to always access personal Gmail via an incognito or private browsing tab.

Once you have your ArcGIS Online account set up (see link at the bottom of this article for info on requesting an account), you can begin creating maps and apps. The first step is to create a map in ArcGIS. The map, along with multi-media (e.g., audio, video, images), can be gathered into a story map and published online.

There are different types of story map apps serve a variety of purposes. Each type has a template (graphic organizer) for structuring your data in a way that tells a story.

View the types of Story Maps and tutorials for creating one.

Read the "Before you start" section of the tutorial. You will find helpful tips such as "gather and organizes all the media you want to use".

Note: When building a Story Map Tour, images with landscape orientation are preferred.

Sign in to ArcGIS Online: https://www.arcgis.com/home/index.html

Note: If you have already created a map on ArcGIS Online, click "Share" and select "Create a Web App".

Select "Apps" from the horizontal menu at the top of the page.

Click the "Build" button next to the type of Story Map you would like to create. The Cascade style is popular.

Click on the objects to enter a title, add image or video to the Cover of the StoryMap Cascade. The image will become the background.

Images may be added from ArcGIS, Flickr, Google+, Unsplash or via a link to the content (in Google Drive, for example, though remember to set the permissions according to how the map will be shared to "public" if the map will be shared publicly).

Note: Images can be uploaded to ArcGIS only after a StoryMap is saved. This is not the best option as we have limited storage space on ArcGIS. It would be best to create a Google Drive folder with permissions set to "public" or "anyone with the link can access" so that all images in the folder take on the same permission setting.

Click the white down arrow at the bottom of the screen to reveal a tiny gray plus sign.

Click the plus sign to open the menu for the next section type. The options are: Text, Media, Title, Immersive. Click the desired option. You are now well on your way to creating a StoryMap.

No worries if content is out of order or you wish to add new content in between sections. Simply select the "Organize" button on the lower left corner to drag and drop the sections to reorder them.

The last section is for adding credits, sources, and references.

Select the "Save" button in the upper left, then click the "View" button (eye icon) to preview. Only you can see the StoryMap at this point. Select the appropriate privacy setting: blue lock = private; grid = Organization only; Globe = Public.

From the horizontal menu bar at the top of the web site, select "My Stories" to access your saved StoryMaps or find all content listed under the Content tab on the home page.

The Online version of ArcGIS allows one to use, create, and share maps, layers, analytics, and data. Arc mapping software is created by ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute).

You get access to Living Atlas of the World, a collection of the world's geographic data. You will also be able to create apps--such as Story Maps without needing to learn to code.

Click on the ArcGIS link in Moodle or visit https://augsburgu.maps.arcgis.com and sign in with your Augsburg login information.

Log into ArcGIS Online: https://augsburgu.maps.arcgis.com

Select "Map" from the horizontal menu at the top of the page. The My Map page will open. Follow a guided tour, or follow the steps below.

Zoom in to the level appropriate for the data you wish to display on the map. Click the plus sign (or use keyboard shortcuts such as [Ctrl + +] or [Ctrl + scroll the wheel on your mouse].

Click Basemap to add a background map Add layers of data via the "Add" button. Try selecting "Browse Living Atlas Layers" to "Add to Map" > "As Layer". You can also select a layer to add as the basemap itself.

Tip: Blog on creating basemaps using layers (create hybrid basemaps by combining multiple layers)

For example, select the "Imagery" Basemap and Add the Living Atlas Layer for the CDC's Vulnerability Index (SVI) - 2014 socioeconomic SVI, census tract level.

Use the tools under the layer or the More button (three-dots) to change the way the layer looks. For example, change the transparency.

Select "Analysis" and review the types available. These may take some time to process and will generate an error if the proper data is not available in the map.

Tip: Blog on Spatial Analysis

Select "Save" > "Save As" to save a new map.

Select "Share" to select the option for how you would like to share your map. You can make it public for the world to access, only available to the ACTC (Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities) / Augsburg group, copy a link to the map or move to the next iteration by creating a web app (e.g., StoryMap).

YouTube videos can be made available to the wider community for enabling volunteers to add closed-captioning.

Use media transcription standards such as those adopted by the FCC. These include: accurate spelling, sentence case, proper grammar and punctuation, when there are multiple speakers, identify who is speaking in the video using speaker labels, capture non-speech sounds inside [square brackets], transcript verbatim for broadcast media. Be careful not to obscure onscreen text with captions.

Access YouTube while logged into your Augsburg account: Click the Google Apps button and select YouTube. If YouTube is not listed, click "More" to find the YouTube app.

Click Sign In to log into YouTube.

If you have multiple channels, select the one you wish to work in. Otherwise, click the left menu and select "My Channel".

Select the Upload button.

Select the security of the video and drag the video file into the window.

Fill in the Basic info, such as title of the video. Make sure to select the "Advanced Settings" tab to remove the commenting/rating options and to enabled Community Contributions to captions. When the video processing is complete, click the blue "Publish" button in the upper right.

Click the "Video Manager" button.

Click the "Edit" drop-down and select "Subtitles/CC" to add captions.

Click the blue "Add new subtitles or CC" button, and select the preferred language.

Click "Transcribe and Autosync" to listen to the video and type as you go. The video will pause during typing. You can also paste in a script you typed ahead of time which usually generates a more polished set of captions.

Select the blue "Set Timings" button and apply to "My drafts" to align settings with your typed transcript. A new window will open showing the captions along with timings. Make edits and then click the blue "Publish" button.

If you already have many videos uploaded to YouTube which need captions, it can help to allow community contributions. From the Video Manager, click the "Actions" button > "More actions..." > "Community Contributions".

Select the option to allow viewers to add closed captioning content and click the "Submit" button.

The update may take some time to process. Check the box and click the "Yes, submit" button.

Share the link to contribute to your channel:

Now anyone can add closed captions by clicking the gear (or settings) icon on the lower right corner of the video frame and selecting "Add subtitles/CC", or they can use the shared contribution link to view a list of videos and select the "Contribute" button under the Action column.

Select "English" as the language if this will be the preferred caption language.

Prepare to play the video and type in the "Add subtitles" text box. The video will pause as you type unless you uncheck this option (located below the video). If the video does not auto-play after you stop typing, press Shift + Spacebar to start it up again. It will automatically pause when you begin typing.

Once the video has been captioned, it needs to be reviewed. Check for and fix typos or wrong subtitles. Click "Approve" to finish the review (it can be approved by the owner of the video which is best in the case of Augsburg materials or it will automatically be approved after a number of approvals are made).

To mount your Student drive in Linux you will first need to install the ncpmount application:

From the terminal under Fedora flavors of Linux:

sudo yum install ncpmount

     enter [sudo] password

From the terminal under Debian flavors of Linux:

  or

sudo aptitude install ncpmount

     enter [sudo] password

Once you have ncpmount installed, you just need to open the terminal and get use the following signature:

sudo ncpmount -S STUDENT -A student.augsburg.edu -U <username.firstLetterOfUsername.students.augsburg -V student_home /<mountpoint>

If you do not wish to type this every time, you could simply create a shell script to run when you want to mount your Student Drive.

Create a file in your home folder named networkMount.sh that contains:

#/bin/sh
sudo ncpmount -S STUDENT -A student.augsburg.edu -U <auggie.a.students.augsburg -V student_home /media/auggie/netshare

There is a new way to print at Augsburg! Instead of installing individual printers, you will install one print queue which will hold your print job. Then you will go to any printer set up to work with the queue and scan your fob. Tap your print job on the screen to select it to be printed. The job(s) will print and you will be automatically logged out of the printer.

Alternatively, you may log in with your Augsburg username and password.

Print jobs will expire if not printed in a timely manner. Jobs will expire after 4 hours if not released to be printed. If you forget to pick up your printed item, you can always resend the file.

Open a web browser and go to https://iprint.augsburg.edu.

Note: If you have not installed the iPrint software, click the button on the top left for "Install iPrint Client" to download the software. Double click the downloaded file to install the iPrint software. You will need to exit out of the browser and reopen it before continuing to the next step.

Open the web page https://iprint.augsburg.edu. Scroll down until you see the item in the first column named "HC-FollowMe-Printer". Click the "printer" (actually, a print queue) to install it on your computer.

Open the file you wish to print. Select the printer named "HC-FollowMe-Printer" and print the job.

Go to the printer you wish to retrieve your items. If you set the job to print in color, make sure to pick it up from a printer capable of color printing (e.g., 3rd level workroom). Stapling is available via the printer for workrooms on all levels.

If you send a document multiple times to the print queue, you can select the print job and delete it from the printer to save paper and toner.

To salvage a file, such as a Microsoft Word document (from your Augnet Folder) that was lost, follow these steps:

Open the person's H-drive and check for a temporary file. If one is found, open it through Microsoft Word normally if a doc file. Otherwise open with Microsoft Word having selected "all files" from the drop-down menu where it says .

If the temporary file is not already in the H-drive, you will need to salvage it. Go to Computer, then right click on the student's H-drive and select "salvage files".

Sort by "date deleted" and select the file(s) matching the lost file's name. Also check for file size; for example, 1KB will not yield much useful data, however a larger size probably will.

Select "salvage file". This will send the temporary file to the H-drive.

Repeat step 1.

If the newly salvaged file is not visible on the H-drive, go to Organize--> Folder and Search Options--> View and uncheck "hide protected operating system files".

Repeat step 1.

Set up a static Zoom link so that you can use the same link to connect with others via Zoom video/phone conferencing. If this setting is not turned on, then Zoom will create a link with a different Meeting ID every time you start a Zoom meeting session. A static link makes it easy to share the same link for Zoom when regularly connecting with others.

Sign into https://augsburg.zoom.us

(How to sign in via SSO (Single Sign On): https://go.augsburg.edu/zoomhowto)

From the top left menu, select "My Profile" to verify "Use this ID for instant meetings" is set up. A green check mark indicates it is turned on.

If it is not turned on, then click the blue Edit link to the right of the Personal Meeting ID section to click the checkbox next to "Use this ID for instant meetings". Now, every time you host a meeting in Zoom (unless using the scheduler) your associated Meeting ID and link will be used (these items are redacted in the image above).
