How to troubleshoot viewing Microsoft Word email attachments
Posted by Eric Ratsabouth on 22 May 2014 11:47 AM

Try the following troubleshooting steps if you receive either of the following error messages when attempting to open a word document e-mail attachment:

“The document name or path is invalid.”

“The document may appear to be damaged and may be unrecoverable.”

To solve this issue ask the sender to save the document in rich text format (RTF) and then resend it. Be aware that some formatting may be lost. To save a document in rich text format, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu in Word, click Save As.
  2. In the Save as type box, click Rich Text Format (*.rtf), and then click Save.

 For Firefox Users

If you are using Firefox, it is also important to check that your browser is allowing permission for the specific file type to open. To do this:

  1. Log into your Augsburg email.
  2. In the address bar click on the padlock icon.
  3. Click More Information…
  4. Then click on the Permissions tab.
  5. Then check Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office, etc. to Allow.
