How to create your personal Augsburg website

Inside your AugNet folder is a special folder named 'www'.  Files saved in your 'www' folder will appear on your personal Augsburg web page.

The web address for your page will be http://web.augsburg.edu/~username, where 'username' is your AugNet username.

Step 1: Create your pages

First, create your web pages. You can do this with a program like Dreamweaver or NVU, or you can write the pages in HTML. The important thing is to make sure that your main page is named "index.html" or "index.htm". Your pages won't load properly in step 3 if there's no page named "index".

If you are including images or linking to other files from your web pages, put a copy of the images or files in the same folder with your web pages. Then link to those copies of the images or files. This will help prevent problems with broken images or links when you upload your web site.

Step 2: Upload your pages

Now, copy your pages into your web space. Your web space is a folder named 'www' inside your AugNet file storage space. To copy the files, you can:

• Use your favorite connection method from the AugNet folders info page
  
  
• Use FTP (Dreamweaver or NVU).
  If you used Dreamweaver, NVU, or a similar program to create your pages, you should use the FTP method to upload your files. Because of the way these programs create links, using other upload methods might cause links to be broken. In the Dreamweaver or NVU settings for your site, you'll need to enter the following information:
  
  HTTP address or URL for site: "http://web.augsburg.edu/~username" (fill in your own username!)
  FTP server address: "ftp://ftp.augsburg.edu/~username/www" (fill in your own username!)
  Username and password: your AugNet username and password.
  
  Now when you use Dreamweaver or NVU's "publish" function, it will be able to put your files in the correct place.

Step 3: View your web site

Your web site will be viewable at http://web.augsburg.edu/~username, where username is your AugNet username. Note that the address starts with web, not www.

Solving common web site problems

We've listed a few of the most common problems students encounter with their web sites, along with ways to fix them.

• Error: 404 File Not Found. This message means that the web address you have typed into the browser doesn't exist. Check your typing to make sure everything is correct. If you got to this page by clicking on a link, it means the link is pointing to a page that doesn't exist. If you used Dreamweaver or a similar program to create your files, make sure you use FTP to upload your files.
  
  
• Error: 403 Forbidden. This is the message that appears when you try to view your page if you do not have a file named "index.html" or "index.htm" in your web storage space. Make sure your main page is named "index.html" or "index.htm".
  
  
• Images appear as red x's. This happens when the web page can't find an image file. First, check to make sure you uploaded the image file along with the web page. Then, check to make sure the link pointing to the image is correct. If you used Dreamweaver or a similar program to create your files, make sure you use FTP to upload your files.

NOTE: the student web server does not support databases, cgi scripts, or other content that requires a separate program or script to be installed on the server. These items are restricted to the main Augsburg web site for security reasons. PHP coding is allowed to the extent that it does not interact with a database or other outside script.
