Using Remote Desktop Connection for Windows and Mac (Faculty/Staff)

Remote Desktop is available to people with Augsburg University accounts who need access to a windows application from off-campus. The server name of hosts these applications through Microsoft Remote Desktop Services. This article covers how to connect from both a Mac and a Windows PC. To connect to you'll need a broadband internet connection.

Connect to RDP from Mac OS X using Microsoft Remote Desktop

Note: If you do not have the Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac OS X you can download it from the Mac App Store:

 Manually configure your Mac client to connect to

  • Browse to Macintosh HD > Applications > Microsoft Remote Desktop. After launching the application, you will be presented with a pop up screen similar to the one below.


  • Click on the plus sign icon to configure the client with the information listed below or as it appears on the image down below.

Connection name: Augsburg Remote Desktop Connection (You can name the connection whatever you want.  What you see here is jut an example)

PC name:

Gateway: Augsburg Gateway (Select that option from the drop down list)

User name: (Enter your Augsburg username here)

Password: (Enter your Augsburg password here)

The rest of the fields and check marks can be left as they are


Connect to RDP from a Windows PC (Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/8/10):

Manually configure your client to connect to
  1. From the Windows Start Menu, choose Programs > Accessories > Remote Desktop Connection

  2. Enter into the Computer field.

  3. Click the downward-pointing arrow next to Show Options at the bottom left corner.

  4. Choose the Advanced tab at the top.

  5. In the section titled "Connect from anywhere" click on the Settings... button.

  6. Choose the selection circle next to "Use these RD Gateway server settings:"    For the Server Name, enter .  Set the Logon Method to "Ask for password".

  7. At the bottom of the window, check the box for "Use my RD Gateway credentials for the remote computer".

  8. Click the OK button to close the Gateway window.

  9. Go back to the General tab.

  10. Choose Connect.  If prompted for a username and password, enter your AugNet login.  You may need to add an AD\ in front of your username, like this: AD\username

  11. You may receive a warning dialog that "The identity of the remote computer cannot be verified.  Do you want to connect anyway?" Choose Connect.

  12. Enter your Augsburg username and password. Choose the Login Arrow to begin your session.
