This article will teach you how to resize your videos so you can upload onto Handbrake.

First you would want to install the program, if not already on your computer. Lab machines on-campus should already have the Handbrake program installed.

Go to handbrake.fr to install the program.

Windows

  1. Click the .exe file to open the installation setup

  2. Once the installation has completed, open the HandBrake program

  3. To find the file you need to resize. Click the "Source" button in the upper lefthand corner of the program. In the submenu that pops up press "Open File" .

  4. Browse for the file that you need to resize, select it and click "Open". (for instance selecting a DVD movie disc you've inserted)

  5. Once you have the file chosen, click on the "Video" tab, below the section labeled "Output Settings"

  6. There is a slider labeled "Constant Quality" that ranges from 0 to 51 (51 being the worst quality and the smallest file while 0 is the best quality with the largest file size). Choose the quality you want based on how big of a file you would like. Suggested values are 18 - 20 for standard definition and 20 - 23 for high definition. A value of 0 will result in a file size larger than the original.

  7. After this, click the "Browse" button to choose a destination for your file.

  8. Navigate to the folder where you would like save the new video and type a name for the file in the "File Name" box at the bottom of the screen.

  9. Click "Save" and the location you chose will now appear under the Destination heading.

  10. Press "Start" and the file will begin resizing.

  11. The new video file will appear in the destination folder you chose.

Repeat steps if the file is still too large, dragging the "Constant Quality" slider higher.

Mac

  1. Open the .dmg file and drag Handbreak.app to the applications folder. Once the program is installed, open it.

  2. Once the program is opened. Click on "Normal" under the preset sidebar.

  3. To find the file you need to resize. Click the "Source" button in the upper lefthand corner of the program. In the submenu that pops up press "Open File".

  4. Browse for the file that you need to resize and double click.

  5. Once you have the file chosen, click on the video tab near the middle of the interface.

  6. There should be a slider that ranges from 0 to 51 (51 being the worst quality and the smallest file while 0 is the best quality with the largest file size). Choose the quality you want based on how big of a file you would like.

  7. After this, press Start (next to the Source button) and the file should automatically resize from there.

  8. Once you are all finished, you can upload the file to the internet.

Repeat steps if the file is still too large, dragging the "Constant Quality" slider higher.
